Advance Map is the most essential tool for Pokemon hacking. It lets you change the weather, houses, Position of signposts (non-human speaking parts) The name of towns, routes, the music of those towns and routes, you can change where doors lead you, if it's even a door at all because you may have turned it into just a hole in the wall!
Although it has a little problem, it takes FOREVER to load ROMS. So if you want to use this (and you will) have something else open like the internet or the TV turned on or go take care of business, because it takes a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to load a ROM.
But once the ROM is loaded it runs perfectly smoothly and everything is as it should be!
Opening the ROM
First you can Either select the usual "File->open ROM" or if you look right under file you see a picture of a GBA cartridge with a curling arrow on it. This also brings up the window to select ROMS. Once you select a ROM we play the waiting game. I was loading a ROM when I typed that last sentence and it took longer to load it than to type it, and I'm a slow typist.
Once the ROM finally loads it will seem like nothing has changed but for the column on the left. There are now 3 choices: "From Header, From INI, Map Files" These house the directories of your maps!
To save the ROM either click File->save or the picture of a GBA cart with a straight arrow.
Now we enter "Example Time With Shiai (Me)"
Also for this example I'm going to assume you are hacking Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald.
First click on "from header"
When that list pops down click on the one marked "0"
Now a List of all the outside portions of all the: Towns, Routes, And Underwater Areas have poped up.
Changing the Way A Map Looks.
Click on the town you want to edit.
Now a map of the town will be showing! Minus people and other events like warps and some script stuff (IDK how to script don't ask me)
Now we can start editing Littleroot Town.
Click on ANY of those weird square thingys on the right column there. Those are the map change squares. Click on one then click ANYWHERE in the map of Littleroot town, the Square will show up!
Sometimes to make a building look NORMAL you need to use the squares in a way that they flow into each other.
Changing the Movement Permissions
When you are done changing the map there may be some movement glitches. This is where the second tab (above the map) movement permissions comes in.
the ones you are most likely to be using are:
0~used on doors for best entry without glitching up.
1~Obstacle, this is the movement piece that makes that annoying buzz sound when you walk into it.
4~this is the movement that is only passable using surf. place on water when you want that "the water is crystal clear, do you want to use surf?" message to pop up.
C~ Passable these are the ones you walk through. ABSOLUTELY NEEDED, y"know unless you don't want to move at all.
Once you have moved some houses and stuff around or made entirely new stuff some events (like people and door warps) may be not in the right place. to change this you go into the events tab to change where people, warps, signposts and other things around.
Now, to ,make things easier on you you can go to the settings menu and then click "show sprites" this will change the square with a "P" to a sprite of the person that will appear In-Game.
Once you have done that, you are ready to start changing events. First of all put any warps on the new doors. Like if you moved the Lab to the top of the Village move the old warp up there.
Then you can move people around to your hearts content. And when you click on a person A little info column opens up on the right. In this column there is:
An option to remove this event from the game.
"Picture no" this selects the combo of sprites this person is like a little girl or that fat guy.
How they Move
And a list of the number of each type of event
I know I skipped some stuff but i skipped the stuff i dont know or that isn't important.
Wild Pokemon Data
Now that your events are in place It's time to create or edit your wild Pokemon data.
If this is a town there is a VERY large chance that there is no wild Pokemon data in the town. So what you do is select the tab for "Wild Pokemon" and Press "Create new wild Pokemon data" Then you press the buttons for the type of encounter area you want.Such as grass surfing fishing and other stuff. Once you have that selected, you can set how often you encounter Pokemon in the area of your choosing (grass, surfing, ect. What Pokemon appear and what level.
The header lets you change the music name and weather of a map area.
To change the name you just skip the little list of names and in where it says the name of your map area you type a new name then press "Change name"
To change the weather and music you go to the small box below the name-change one.
I've never used the cave option so I don't know how to use it
Type changes the type of map it is. Self explanatory.
Weather~ just simply select the type of weather you want and then save the ROM.
Fight Type~ once again I have no idea what this does. Sorry.
Header Part 2- The Size and Tilesets
The tilesets are the sets of the squares used to change a map around. Be warned if you change the tileset there will be a HUGE amount of glitched tiles before you fix the map. When doing this you basically create a map from scratch.
The size changing can destroy parts of a map adjacent to it. It measures from the top-right corner to the edge. Type in your width and height and you are done! (of course you have to go through these steps again minus the header)
The Finished Map I Was Making Along With This Tutorial BEFOREAFTER
I call it "Greentack Village" It may not seem like its bigger but it is.
Look at the size of the flowers (the red ones)
